IP Litigation Assistant

The IP Litigation Assistant (Intellectual Property) will work closely with, and under the immediate direction of supervising attorneys, the Litigation Resource Manager, IP litigation attorneys, and others as assigned. This person should be able to perform essential functions of the job. Personal characteristics that will contribute to the success in this position are a strong work ethic, high degree of personal responsibility and accountability, and a high degree of organization.

Job Description (including but not limited to the following):

  • Perform general case management
  • Prepare legal documents including pleadings, motions, affidavits, complaints, legal memoranda, responses to U.S. Patent and Trademark Office actions
  • File documents with U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), and Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB)
  • File court documents
  • Identify and submit legal documents for patent, trademark and litigation docketing, court and case deadlines using firm software
  • Management of ongoing assigned court and case deadlines
  • Assist attorneys with reviewing, organizing, and summarizing case materials, mail, and other case related documents
  • Assist in preparation of matrices, charts, and spreadsheets as needed
  • Aid in preparation of privilege log
  • Create, revise, and proofread documents with high accuracy
  • Assist with mediation and trial preparation
  • Keep accurate time records for both billable and non-billable tasks
  • Ability to learn and utilize document management firm software to include Microsoft and Relativity
  • All other duties as assigned

Skills and Requirements:

  • Undergraduate degree and/or ABA approved paralegal certificate highly preferred
  • Prior experience working for patent prosecution attorney
  • Previous litigation experience as a legal secretary and/or junior paralegal preferred
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and to remain calm under pressure
  • Strong desire to work in a team environment
  • Willingness to work full-time in the Westlake Village office
  • Ability to become proficient in state and federal court filings as well as USPTO AND PTAB
  • Read, write and communicate fluent English; ability to compose documents in the appropriate business style using correct grammar and spelling; ability to communicate clearly using proper grammar and diction over the telephone
  • High degree of self-directed initiative and individual judgment
  • Attention to detail, ability to balance multiple projects and strong time management skills
  • Reason and apply common-sense understanding to situations encountered
  • Ability to process routine daily functions while being able to resolve sensitive issues and complex assignments utilizing above average critical thinking skills
  • Must be able to work overtime if necessary
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Programs (Word, Excel, Adobe and PowerPoint)
